Ask Dr. Meier: “When should my child visit for an orthodontic consultation?”

April 20th, 2012

Great question! Braces were originally considered to be best appropriate for teens. But these days, kids as old as seven are beginning their orthodontic treatment. Because preadolescent kids are typically not self-conscious, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists suggest it could be a good idea to start early.

Experts, however, say it depends on the treatment required. Some children who get braces at an early age end up in a second phase of treatment, and end up having braces well into their teenage years despite starting young.

Most orthodontic treatment begins between ages nine and 14, and the folks at AAO estimate most orthodontic treatment lasts from one to three years, with two years being the average. It’s important, however, that children be screened no later than age seven for Dr. Meier to assess what the best age for treatment is.

Presidents’ Day Fun Facts with Meier Orthodontics!

February 20th, 2012

Today marks Presidents’ Day, a day known for celebrating of both George Washington’s and Abraham Lincoln’s combined Birthdays. Presidents’ Day was created in 1971, when President Richard Nixon combined the birthdays of two of our most well-known presidents into one single federal holiday. Presidents’ Day also marks a hard-earned day off from work and school for a lot of our patients at Meier Orthodontics.

Here are a few fun facts about our nation’s presidents:

*Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, carried letters, bills and notes in his tall stovepipe hat.

*George Washington is the first president to be featured on a postage stamp.

*Ronald Reagan, our 40th president, broke the so-called “20-year curse,” in which every president elected in a year ending in 0 died in office.

*Harry S. Truman was the first president to have his Inauguration and speeches televised.

*Abraham Lincoln was the tallest of the U.S. presidents measuring 6’ 4” tall.

*Virginia is the birthplace of more United States presidents than any other state, followed by Ohio and Massachusetts.

Happy Halloween from Meier Orthodontics!

October 31st, 2011

Our staff at Meier Orthodontics wanted to remind all our wonderful patients to be careful when they bite into their treats this evening. Remember, caramels, taffy, nuts, bubble gum, popcorn kernels and suckers are some of the foods you should be avoiding this Halloween! Indulging in these foods can break your braces and lengthen your treatment time!

Of course, Halloween doesn’t have to be completely treat-less. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have provided a helpful list of tips and braces-friendly recipes for the Halloween Season.

We wish you all a safe, fun and happy Halloween!

"Dentists, Orthodontists... what's the difference?"

October 12th, 2011

“Dentists, Orthodontists, they’re all the same right?” We hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Before becoming an orthodontist Dr. Scott Meier started out in dental school and earned a dental degree, just like your dentist. After dental school however, Dr. Meier decided he wanted to learn more about orthodontics, which is one of nine specialties within the dental field. So he stayed in school for a few more years and became an expert in orthodontics, which focuses on tooth and jaw alignment and bite problems like overbites and under bites.

Other dental specialties you may have heard of include endodontic (focusing on the soft tissue inside your teeth), periodontic (focusing on the gums and other tissues surrounding your teeth) and prosthodontic (focusing on restoring and replacing damaged teeth).

Isn’t it nice to know there’s a dental expert in Dr. Meier to help you through any type of treatment your teeth, jaw and gums might need?

If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, please contact our Jupiter, FL orthodontic office at (561) 899-6383 for a COMPLIMENTARY consultation. We look forward to working with you! We serve Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, and surrounding areas.

At Meier Orthodontics, October is National Orthodontic Health Month!

October 4th, 2011

For our team at Meier Orthodontics, it’s hard to believe October is already upon us! October marks National Orthodontic Health Month, and this month-long event is organized by our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO.

We know there are many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through treatment at Meier Orthodontics, and these treats may cause damage that could prolong your treatment time with Dr. Meier. The AAO recommends our patients avoid the following Halloween treats:

• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Ice

If you damage your braces, please give Dr. Meier and our team a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved by giving us a call. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some wax until you are able to come into our Jupiter office.

See you soon!

Ask Dr. Meier: What’s the deal with coffee and tea?

September 25th, 2011

At Meier Orthodontics, we know a lot of people enjoy a hot-brewed coffee or tea in the morning, followed by a cola (or more coffee) in the afternoon. But what many don’t know is that both coffee and tea are especially tough on your teeth – especially during orthodontic treatment – because tannic acid (the substance that makes the dark color) etches into the pits and grooves of tooth enamel, and can stain your pearly whites brown.

So, if you can't give up that morning cup o’joe, what can you do? Dr. Meier and team suggest rinsing with a glass of water after every cup. If you enjoy iced coffee or tea, drink your beverage with a straw so that tannins don’t make contact with your front upper and lower teeth. Even if you’re not a big coffee drinker, we encourage you to swish and swallow some water at the end of each meal. Water, after all, helps neutralize acids left in your mouth after eating and also reduces cavity-causing bacteria.

And if you’re one of those folks who just needs their morning coffee or tea, Dr. Meier and our team suggest using a colored ligature instead of a clear or white one. If all else fails, ask us to use tie wires instead of elastic ligatures as tie wires do not stain at all.

We hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions below or ask us on Facebook!

After all, reviews help Dr. Meier create more beautiful smiles! Thank you in advance, and we hope you have a great day! You may write your review of us here.

September is Self-Improvement Month, from Meier Orthodontics

September 13th, 2011

These days, Americans everywhere are putting greater emphasis on health, fitness and self-improvement, and more people are seeking orthodontic treatment to improve their smile. September happens to be Self-Improvement Month, and our team at Meier Orthodontics know that orthodontic treatment is an investment in self-improvement that will reap benefits for a lifetime. And, recent advances in orthodontia, such as Invisalign and more effective brackets and wires, now make orthodontic treatment more palatable for many interested in obtaining that beautiful smile.

Not only does orthodontic treatment give you that beautiful smile, it can also benefit your dental and general health. If teeth are poorly aligned, removing plaque and tartar by brushing and flossing alone may be difficult. A poor bite may result in fractured or excessively worn tooth surfaces, and the extra stress caused by a poor bite may even result in problems with your jaw joints.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, please contact our Jupiter, FL orthodontic office at (561) 899-6383 for a COMPLIMENTARY consultation. Dr. Scott Meier and our team look forward to working with you! We serve Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, and surrounding areas.

Tips for a successful school year, from Meier Orthodontics

September 6th, 2011

At Meier Orthodontics, we know a new school year brings a lot of stress for many kids. New classes, new teachers, new friends and new academic challenges can be overwhelming! That’s why we thought we’d provide a few steps for our patients to enjoy their time in school and succeed this upcoming school year!

• Get plenty of sleep every night. Eight hours is recommended.
• Eat a healthy breakfast as it’s the most important meal of the day.
• Pack a healthy lunch or make healthy choices when selecting your school lunch. Try to avoid the vending machine and limit your intake of junk food.
• Stay on top of your homework and reading assignments.
• Stay active. Limit the time in front of the TV or playing video games. Instead, try to get outside to get some exercise—go for a walk or ride your bike.
• Ask for help. When you are having a hard time understanding a concept, ask your teacher or your peers for guidance.
• Always have a positive attitude and a smile on your face!

Dr. Meier & our entire team hope everyone has a productive and fun school year!

Are you wearing your mouthguard? From Dr. Meier

August 24th, 2011

With fall sports almost here for a lot of our patients at Meier Orthodontics we thought today would be a great time to remind all our young athletes in treatment to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in sports – especially contact sports such as soccer and football – this fall.

One of the most important pieces of sports equipment you can wear on the field is a mouthguard. A well-fitted mouthguard, which we’re happy to provide, allows you to breathe and speak more clearly, in addition to protecting your mouth and braces. Only by using a mouth guard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. The next time you’re in for a visit with Dr. Meier, we encourage you to ask us for a mouthguard! In addition, the American Association of Orthodontists has five quick tips for keeping kids safe during sport activities this fall.

• Wear a helmet
• Stretch before and after a game or practice
• Wear protective eyewear
• Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
• Be observant, even as a spectator

We hope you’re enjoying your summer, and invite you all to share your summer photos on our Facebook page!

Tell Meier Orthodontics about your summer!

August 15th, 2011

The dog days of summer are upon us, and what better time for Dr. Meier and team to ask our patients about their summer!

Whether you visited our nation’s capital, went on a camping trip or just stayed in Jupiter and hung out with friends, we want to know how you’re all spending your summer! Please feel free to share your summer plans and experiences with us below or on our Facebook page as the summer comes to an end soon for a lot of our patients at Meier Orthodontics!

When you need immediate care, we’re here for you.

August 7th, 2011

At Meier Orthodontics, we know orthodontic emergencies are never convenient nor timely. If you are a patient of record, we are committed to your dental health and are more than willing to see you after hours or over the weekend. As a general rule, you should call the office when you experience severe pain or when you have a painful appliance problem that you can’t take care of yourself. We’ll be able to schedule an appointment to resolve the problem. If you have a orthodontic emergency after regular office hours, please give us a call. If you are calling us after hours, please follow the emergency prompts to contact our team.

You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to temporarily solve many problems yourself until you visit our office. We proudly serve patients from Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens, among other surrounding communities.

We hope you’re all enjoying your summer.

Are you visiting the dentist during orthodontic treatment?

August 1st, 2011

If you're brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing during your orthodontic treatment at Meier Orthodontics, that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important to visit your general dentist every six months in addition to your visits to our Jupiter office. Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can:

• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and early signs of decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth

During an oral exam the doctor will check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, it’s definitely time to schedule an appointment! If you don't have a general dentist, just ask us - Dr. Meier knows plenty of great dentists in our area, including Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens!

We are looking forward to our Football Season Kick-off PIZZA PARTY on Monday, August 1st for the Palm Beach Gardens Youth Athletic Association Pop Warner players, cheerleaders & coaches. Dr. Meier is a 2011 Elite Invisalign provider!

July 25th, 2011

Dr. Meier and our team are proud to be the only Elite Invisalign provider in Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens, as well as the only Invisalign Teen provider in the area! We are delighted to have provided care for so many of our patients! If you've been thinking about the "clear" alternative to braces, we invite you to learn more about Invisalign & Invisalign Teen! Happy Monday!

Ask Dr. Meier: “I’m 31 – am I too old for orthodontic treatment?”

July 18th, 2011

Great question, and you are absolutely not "too old" for braces! At Meier Orthodontics, nobody is “too old” for a new smile! In fact, we read a fascinating statistic not too long ago: adults getting braces has actually jumped 24 percent since 1996! Also, one of every five patients in orthodontic treatment nowadays is over the age of 21. Of course, braces help make your teeth stay strong, healthy and become perfectly-aligned. But we’d like you to know orthodontic treatment with Dr. Meier can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.

In fact, we are proud to offer an adult-friendly option for straightening teeth called Invisalign, which uses a series of invisible, removable and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you're wearing. So, you can smile more during treatment as well as after.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, we would love to have you visit for a COMPLIMENTARY consultation at our Jupiter office. Please give us a call to set one up and have a wonderful rest of the week!

Straight teeth and you, from Meier Orthodontics

July 12th, 2011

Patients and their families always ask us why Dr. Scott Meier and our team at Meier Orthodontics work so hard to give our patients straight teeth. Yes, it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at Meier Orthodontics can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque, the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they’re easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a COMPLIMENTARY consultation. Dr. Meier can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment at our convenient office in Jupiter.

Tell us about your summer plans!

June 15th, 2011

At Meier Orthodontics, we just can't believe it's already June. As the school year comes to an end for a lot of Dr. Meier's patients, the days get longer and the temperatures begin to climb, there’s no better way to beat the heat than jump into a pool or cool off under the shade with a beverage. For a lot of our patients, summer brings a chance to get away from it all and escape every-day life, if only for a week or two. For others, it means a season of relaxation and relief from homework and other duties.

What about you?

What are your plans for summer? Do you have any interesting plans for a summer vacation? Does your family have a vacation or family reunion planned? We want to see when and how you are all spending your summer vacations. If you’re going somewhere exotic, fantastic! If you're going camping, awesome! Even if you're staying at home, that can be fun, too.

Please feel free to share your summer plans and experiences with us on our Facebook page as the summer rolls along!

Smile! June is National Smile Month!

June 2nd, 2011

Now that June is here, our team at Meier Orthodontics thought we’d tell you June is National Smile Month, and a good time to remind all our patients to practice good oral hygiene between your visits to our convenient Jupiter office, as well as your general dentist.

Below are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many years to come:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
* Floss everyday to clean between your teeth and braces.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your orthodontic treatment
* Visit your dentist regularly (every 6 months or as recommended by your dentist)!

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call, ask Dr. Meier during your next visit or ask us on Facebook!

May marks National Teen Self-Esteem Month

May 23rd, 2011

At Meier Orthodontics, we know image is everything. At an age when image is so important, the thought of having braces may intensify the already-delicate confidence of today's teens. Well, May marks National Teen Self-Esteem Month, and even though May is almost over, we'd like to remind you one of the great ways to improve your confidence is to improve your smile. And that begins with a free consultation to Meier Orthodontics. After all, what better time to avoid having crooked teeth in your adulthood than coming in for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Meier?

We proudly provide both traditional braces and Invisalign Teen for today’s image-conscious teens.

We invite you to give us a call to schedule a COMPLIMENTARY consultation or ask us on Facebook!

Teacher Appreciation Party on June 2nd!

May 17th, 2011

Are you a business owner or know a business owner? Or do you simply want to be charitable to a group of deserving leaders?

We don’t need to tell you that these are trying times for any business owner. It seems that each day, there is another reason to feel uneasy about the future. Our area teachers feel equally uneasy as jobs are eliminated this upcoming year and the Governor’s Education Reform Bill heads to legislature. As you know the schools districts in Palm Beach Counties are consistently ranked among the best in the state. This is largely due to the hard work and dedication of the men and women whom we entrust with the education of our children.

For the 7th year in a row, Meier Orthodontics is sponsoring a teacher appreciation party for teachers and staff of the northern Palm Beach County schools. The event will be held on June 2nd from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Panama Hatties Cruzan Rum Bar. We will be providing happy hour, food, and music. Local Businesses will also be present to provide FREE Give-Aways!!!

This event has become so popular due in large part from all the raffle gift donations from local businesses and now people. We couldn't do it without you! Thank You!

In addition to recognizing the efforts of perhaps the most underappreciated members of our community, your business’ name will be listed as a contributing sponsor on various invitation pieces, on our blog and Facebook website event page, which all will be distributed to 2,500 potential customers. The response that we have received every year from local businesses eager to contribute to this event is overwhelming. We also incorporated a booth or table presentations for our sponsors to allow them to further promote their business throughout the event. Should you choose to be at the event, you are responsible for providing your own tent and table and for running your raffle give away. This will bring potential patrons to your table and allow you the opportunity to collect contact information for future marketing. The more fun and inviting your table is, the more people you will attract. To help our sponsors, we have agreed to not allow competing businesses to be present at the event. Therefore, it is first come first serve as a table sponsor. However, we still welcome any door prizes you may offer and your business name will still be on every event invitation or Internet event site as well as on all post event emails to all the teachers.

We appreciate your consideration. Please contact Amy Carter at 799-4848 or acarter@drmeierortho.com for further information.

Dr. Meier visits the AAO Annual Session in Chicago

May 9th, 2011

Patients at Meier Orthodontics can feel confident they are receiving the best in orthodontic health care. Dr. Scott Meier's goal is to provide the most up-to-date technology and techniques using the best equipment possible. He is devoted to continuing education and furthers his learning through reading, attending conferences and continuing education courses. One of those conferences includes the 2011 AAO Annual Session in Chicago, where Dr. Meier will head next weekend.

The AAO Annual Session is an always-educational event that is also one of the largest orthodontic conventions in the world. It's also a time for Dr. Meier to consult with dental experts and orthodontists from around the country and stay up-to-date on all the latest technologies and orthodontic treatment options available. This, of course, allows Dr. Meier to give you, our phenomenal patients, the best treatment experience possible.

In addition to being Board Certified through the American Board of Orthodontists, Dr. Meier is the past president of the Northern Palm Beach County Dental Society and an active member of the Southern Association of Orthodontists.

Isn't it nice to know you have a complete dental expert in Dr. Meier taking care of your perfecting your smile?

How well do you know your braces? From Meier Orthodontics

April 30th, 2011

If you should ever sustain damage to your braces and need to call us at Meier Orthodontics, we can help you more effectively if you can tell Dr. Meier and our team exactly which piece is in trouble! Here’s a handy diagram and corresponding list of all the parts that make up your braces.

Elastic Tie: Tiny rubber band that fits around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

Archwire: The main wire that acts as a track to guide the teeth along. It's changed periodically throughout treatment, as teeth move to their new positions.

Loop in Archwire: Frequently used for closing space left by an extraction. Many archwires don't have a loop.

Bracket: Small attachment that holds the archwire in place. Most often, a bracket is cemented directly onto the tooth's surface, eliminating the need for a band.

Headgear Tube: Round, hollow attachment on the back bands. The inner bow of the headgear fits into it.

Coil Spring:
Fits between brackets and over archwire to open space between teeth.

Tie Wire: Fine wire that is twisted around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

Band: A thin ring of metal fitted around a tooth and cemented in place. The band provides a way to attach the brackets to the tooth.

Hook: Welded or removable arm to which elastics (rubber bands) are attached.

Elastic (Rubber Band): Small rubber band that is hooked between different points on the appliance to provide pressure to move the teeth.

Hope this helps! Give us a call at Meier Orthodontics if you have any questions!

Ask Dr. Meier: Now that I have braces, which foods should I avoid?

April 20th, 2011

There are a variety of foods Dr. Meier wants you to avoid while you're wearing braces. Some foods can occasionally damage braces, but certain foods can bend the wires or even break the brackets on your braces. If you’re wearing braces, you should avoid starch, sugar and gummy foods, as these foods can be difficult to remove during brushing. Foods that are high in sugar and starch tend to cause plaque, cavities and even tooth decay.

Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables such as carrots and celery. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Foods you should avoid include:

• Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
• Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
• Sticky foods: caramels, gum
• Hard foods: nuts, candy
• Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots

Also, chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

If you have any questions on which foods you should be avoiding and why, we invite you to give Meier Orthodontics a call or ask our staff during your next visit with Dr. Meier.

Or, you may ask us on Facebook!

Your orthodontic treatment, part IV

April 11th, 2011

In our final entry of our four-part series on successful orthodontic treatments, Dr. Meier and our team thought we'd touch on doctor-patient relationships and how they can improve.

At Meier Orthodontics, we know everyone’s lives are so busy these days. It seems like we’re all in a hurry to get to the next place. For that reason, we have an open office policy. Our patients and parents are encouraged to walk around, ask our staff and Dr. Meier questions while they’re here. For the parents who are in the waiting room, often times they have a question or 2 to discuss with Dr. Meier. Our open office policy is designed for them to come to the treatment area and talk to Dr. Meier during their child’s appointment, not just after when it’s now time for them to go to soccer, piano, etc.

We hope you've enjoyed our four-part series! Let us know if you have any more questions here or on our Facebook page! We hope to hear from you!

Your orthodontic treatment, part III

April 6th, 2011

Our four-part series on what makes a successful orthodontic patient continues this week with "How can patients improve the way they approach treatment?"

This is a great question - Most people consider orthodontics cosmetic, and therefore elective. More often though, orthodontics is a cure to an existing problem or a potential problem that will occur in adulthood. Problems such as localized gum disease, abfractions, recurring chipped teeth, etc.

At Meier Orthodontics, Dr. Meier and our team offer several orthodontic treatments, including Invisalign invisible braces, clear braces, lingual braces, and traditional metal braces. All of our treatments are customized to meet your individual dental needs, and give you the beautiful smile you deserve, whether you're a child or an adult. If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, please contact our Jupiter, FL orthodontic office at (561) 799-4848 for a COMPLIMENTARY consultation with Dr. Meier.

Stay tuned for Part Four next week!

Your orthodontic treatment, part II

March 29th, 2011

You may remember our blog from last week, when we began our four-part series on what makes a great orthodontic patient. Here's part two of "What qualities make for a great patient?"

There are many qualities that make for a great patient at Meier Orthodontics. Obviously, anyone who does the about 5 cooperation items listed last week. But for us what stands out the most are the patients that get involved with our office outside of their treatment. This includes interacting with us on Facebook and entering our contests. We love it when patients interact with us on Facebook - it builds a whole new and fun relationship.

Stay tuned for part III next week!

Your orthodontic treatment, part I

March 24th, 2011

At Dr. Meier's office, we like to think of your orthodontic treatment as a two-way street: In the beginning of treatment we have a “Cooperation Agreement” that the kids sign (and adults). It lays out exactly what we are expecting from our patients in order for treatment to be successful.

1. Proper brushing and flossing (Overall good oral health is critical. The patient is in total control of their plaque control. Poor brushing and flossing can cause permanent white stains on the enamel as well as gingivitis and in severe cases gum disease. )

2. Visit your general dentist for teeth cleaning every 3-6 months while in braces.

3. Wearing Appliances or Elastics: In order for treatment to remain on estimated treatment time, any removable items like rubber bands, must be worn as directed or treatment will be prolonged.

4. Care of Appliances: Food, activities, etc. which may cause damage to your braces and cause extra appointments and/or replacement appliances

5. Appointments: Because we pride ourselves on staying on time and having less than a 5 min. wait time, we ask all our patients to keep their appointments and arrive on time as well.

If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, please contact our Jupiter, FL orthodontic office at (561) 799-4848 for a COMPLIMENTARY consultation. We look forward to working with you! We serve Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, and surrounding areas. And stay tuned for Part II next week, when we discuss the qualities that make a great orthodontic patient.

How important is your smile? From Meier Orthodontics

March 21st, 2011

Patients and their families have asked us at Meier Orthodontics why we work so tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s great to have a smile full of evenly-aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at our Fresno office can keep them healthier as well? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!

At Meier Orthodontics, Dr. Meier and our entire team are committed to excellence in orthodontics. It is our goal to provide the highest quality orthodontic treatment available in a professional, caring and fun environment where patients' needs and expectations are our top priority. If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, please contact our Jupiter, FL orthodontic office at (561) 799-4848 for a COMPLIMENTARY consultation. We look forward to working with you! We serve Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, and surrounding areas.

Ask Dr. Meier: Who benefits from braces?

March 10th, 2011

Braces aren’t just for pre-adolescents and teenagers anymore! Our team at Meier Orthodontics will tell you that anyone, at any age, can benefit from orthodontic treatment, whether it’s correcting a problem not treated in your younger years, or catching a problem early.

To ensure the best overall treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, recommends that children receive an orthodontic consultation as early as age seven. If a problem is evident, taking action early with Meier Orthodontics can spare a lot of treatment and expense down the road.

If you never received orthodontic treatment when you were young, don’t worry! You’re never too old for a beautiful smile at Meier Orthodontics. Set up an appointment for a free consultation at our Jupiter office and find out how orthodontics will transform your smile, as well as your life!

All of our treatments are customized to meet your individual dental needs, and give you the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. Our practice offers a casual, fun and comfortable environment where patients and their families are always welcome. If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, please contact our Jupiter, FL orthodontic office at (561) 799-4848 for a COMPLIMENTARY consultation. We look forward to working with you! We serve Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, and surrounding areas.

Dr. Meier & team, helping dispel the myths about braces

February 19th, 2011

Trust us when we say our staff at Meier Orthodontics are well-aware that there are quite a few myths about orthodontics (and orthodontists) flying around nowadays. But before you buy into those myths, Dr. Meier and team want you to get the facts! Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists set the record straight (no pun intended) and have provided some information that sheds some light on the myths and facts of orthodontics. We encourage you to check them out today!

February marks National Children’s Dental Health Month at Meier Ortho

February 1st, 2011

At Meier Orthodontics, February is National Children's Dental Health Month, as well as National Dental Health Month, and Dr. Meier and team thought we’d promote good oral hygiene among our patients with a few tips and tricks, courtesy of the American Dental Association.

• Teeth brushing techniques: It takes only two minutes to properly brush using short, gentle strokes and devoting extra attention to the gumline, areas around fillings and hard-to-reach areas such as the back teeth.

• Flossing: hold the floss snugly between thumbs and index finger and insert it between each of the teeth, making sure to go beneath the gumline and curving the floss around the base of each tooth.

• Snack wisely: choose healthy snacks such as cheese, fruits and vegetables and avoid crunchy, sticky, chewy candies that can stick to the teeth. If you eat these snacks, be sure to brush after doing so.

• Carbonated or sugary drinks: these drinks create acids that can damage the teeth when mixed with saliva, so they should be avoided altogether. If you’re going to drink one of these beverages, don’t sip on it throughout the day. Rather, drink it and then brush your teeth.

• Regular dental visits: in addition to seeing our team at Meier Orthodontics during your orthodontic treatment, you should visit your dentist for professional check-ups and teeth cleaning appointments about every six months.

National Dental Health Month aims to increase awareness about the importance of our patients' oral health. If you have any questions about keeping your mouth healthy, or about your treatment with Meier Orthodontics, please feel free to give us a call or ask us on Facebook!

Everybody loves Meier Ortho!

January 28th, 2011

We love having the whole family come into our office...

This sweet little baby already loves it here at Meier Orthodontics!

Just a friendly reminder that there is only one month left to participate in our video contest. We have had some great submissions already - check out our patients posting on our Facebook page.

Orthodontic treatment and the U.S. economy

January 26th, 2011

With the U.S. and global economy slow to recover after two years, Dr. Meier and our team know people everywhere are still being thrifty and conserving money for basic necessities such as bills and groceries-and in the process might be neglecting their oral health.

In many cases, orthodontic treatment can wait and Dr. Meier is very aware of everyone’s tight budgets. He is often asked, “What will happen if we don’t start treatment now and wait?”

This is such a difficult time for parents. They now are having to hold off on getting something for their children that 2 years ago when the economy was at its best, they would have bought. Whether that be a toy, a night out at the movies, a day at The Rapids and medical/dental care. Dr. Meier is first to say to our patients, “Let’s keep you on a check-up schedule for 6 months to monitor your child’s growth and development until economic times get better for you." Unlike medical conditions, in many cases, orthodontic treatment for older children, although important to maintain good oral health and function, can be delayed. That is the good news. Our consultations and recall appointments are at no charge. That is such a help for our parents who choose to postpone treatment. They feel confident that their children’s dental care is still being monitored.

You should know, however, that there are risks to postponing, skipping or canceling treatment sessions. When appointments are missed or canceled, treatment time will be longer than originally estimated. With today’s technology, patients go 6-8 weeks between visits. Therefore, if they miss an appointment and come in 12 weeks since their last appointment (not 8), they are now one month behind treatment. If this is repetitive than you can see how this causes extended treatment time. In severe cases, damage to the teeth and bone can occur.

Let us know if you have any questions by asking us here, on our Facebook page, or by asking one of our team members at Meier Ortho during your next visit.

Questions, questions...

January 20th, 2011

At Meier Ortho, we offer a casual, fun and comfortable environment where patients and their families are always welcome. This week, our staff discuss the questions patients don’t usually ask during their appointments—and the questions they should be asking.

Most, if not all patients, first concern is cost—even prior to the doctor coming in to acknowledge the need or no need for orthodontic treatment, such as where Dr. Meier went to school, how long he has been in practice, and does orthodontic treatment hurt. We wish patients would ask things like, "How awesome does it feel to have great teeth!" The most important question we think a patient should ask is, "WHAT IS THE WORST thing that could happen—IF I DO NOTHING at this time?" This allows for an open honest conversation between Dr. Meier and the patient.

What’s on your mind? What would you like to know about the field of orthodontics or your own treatment? Let us know by posting here or on our Facebook fan page!

Share your experience at Meier Ortho with the world!

Ask Dr. Meier: Do cold germs live on toothbrushes?

January 8th, 2011

Thanks for the question. Winter is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, Dr. Scott Meier will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

We hope these tips help! Feel free to call us at Meier Orthodontics if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Doesn't Jacque's smile look wonderful? Orthodontic treatment with Dr. Meier can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile. One of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over twenty-one, and, in fact, we read a fascinating statistic recently: the number of adults getting braces has actually climbed 24 percent since 1996! Yes, braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but perhaps another reason for the spike in adult braces is this: people want to look and feel great. In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned and sparkling teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing—wisely, we might add—to invest in orthodontics.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Meier would love to have you visit for a complimentary consultation. Please give us a call to set one up! Dr. Meier is also an Elite Provider of Invisalign®, the clear way to straighten your teeth.

Ask Dr. Meier: Why are straight teeth so important?

December 1st, 2010

Some people wonder why Dr. Scott Meier and our team at Meier Orthodontics work so tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at Meier Orthodontics can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque, the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they're easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a COMPLIMENTARY consultation. Dr. Meier can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment at our convenient office in Jupiter.
